Abstract

The sclerophyllous forest of the Central zone of Chile not only offers ecosystem and/or landscape services, but it is also a biodiversity hotspot with a high degree of endemism, which confers it unique ecologic attributes. The aim of this work was to analyze and quantify the parameters of vegetation diversity of the sclerophyllous forest in Colliguay, to introduce its natural patrimony and build a reference and conceptual framework for future conservation plans for native species. To carry out the survey, a dimensioning through geographic information systems (GIS) was made on the sclerophyllous forest, with transepts of 100 meters on sunny spot and shady hillside, obtaining a registry of the existing flora and cataloging it according to taxonomy, origin and conservation status. Subsequently, a species profile was developed for each hillside, analyzing the richness and abundance of them. The results indicate a high degree of endemism, and the presence of endangered species. Besides, there were clear ecologic differences between sunlight and shade hillsides, whose physical conditions are determinant in the distribution of vegetable species. Despite the existing fragmentation, the patches of the sclerophyllous forest continue keeping their identity with species with a remarkable affinity to lightness and shade, which is an indication of the existing resilience in this sector of the Valparaiso region. Evidence shows that this forest is a remnant of primitive forests, so it needs protection and conservation mechanisms.
