Abstract

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is an objective procedure to evaluate the integrity of the auditory pathways. This technique is used as a complement of rutinary audiological procedures for the diagnosis of auditory disorders. The purpose of this study is to compare the amplitudes and absolute latencies of waves I, III, and V, and the interpeak intervals and I-V using acoustic stimuli of different polarities. Method: 50 adults with no otologic history, 25 mate and 25 female, aged between 18 and 40 years old were assessed using both rarefaction and condensation polarities of the ABR's acoustic stimuli. Results: A significant difference between both types of polarity (rarefaction and condensation) was observed. Conclusion: The polarity of the ABR's acoustic stimuli, as well as other parameters of this technique should be taken into consideration when the data is analysed in order to assure that this procedure is an appropriate tool capable to give accurate and reliable results.
