The Revista Chilena de Fonoaudiología and the Chilean Society of Speech-Language Pathology announce the call for papers for the Special Issue 2027 “Technology and Innovation in Speech-Language Pathology”.
Manuscripts must be submitted through the platform and clearly indicate that they are intended for this special issue. See the full call here.
As of May 22, 2024, authors of articles accepted for publication in the regular issue must pay a translation fee, intended exclusively to cover the costs of the journal’s official translation service. More information HERE.
The Revista Chilena de Fonoaudiología accepts manuscript submissions year-round and publishes on a continuous basis.
The processes associated with aging increase the risk of dysphagia. In this context, ultrasound-based assessment in older adults has emerged as a safe and accessible technique for the early detection of swallowing disorders. However, there is limited evidence regarding the parameters that should guide its clinical application. To address this gap, a scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, with the aim of identifying the clinical parameters used in ultrasound-based swallowing assessment in older adults with normal swallowing function. A search was carried out across three databases between 2013 and 2025, resulting in the inclusion of 19 studies. Overall, the reviewed studies consistently report age-related changes in the hyolaryngeal complex and oropharyngeal musculature in older adults. Nevertheless, substantial heterogeneity and a lack of standardization were identified in relation to ultrasound parameters, technical settings, and assessment procedures. Further research is therefore needed to establish standardized protocols and to strengthen the clinical application of ultrasound in the assessment of swallowing in older adults.
