Trans Vocality (or how to open new perspectives against gender normativity in relation to the voice)

Abstract

This essay seeks to show how a society grounded in the supremacy of cisheteronormativity results in the exclusion of transgender voices. Through colonizing processes that erased the legitimacy various Indigenous communities had granted to gender-dissident identities, the notion of a “correct” and “acceptable” voice was imposed over others—those deemed wrong, in need of correction, or silencing. Indeed, if the sound of a trans voice was not permitted, even less so was its discursive act. This has undoubtedly contributed to a lack of representation in public spaces and the ongoing marginalization of voices that disrupt the cisgender male/female binary. However, in order to meaningfully advance in denaturalizing gender norms and challenging the hegemonic parameters that shape sexuality, a transformation in how we see and listen is essential. Only through such a shift can other vocalities be validated and uplifted—vocalities that help liberate the rigid notions of timbre and tone that have long dictated what a voice should be.
